Occupying one of the most Idyllic spots in Cadgwith, this cottage stands just yards from the beach. A paved Patio for sitting out and watching all the fishing and boating activity, or for just sunbathing and snoozing, ends in a short flight of steps down to the beach itself. In the summer the gentle splash of the waves is about the only noise you will hear. In winter there is no better spot for being warm and cosy even when the Atlantic waves lash the rocks outside. The house was originally built as a capstan house for one of the many seine boat companies in the village. The beams supporting the capstan remain. With the disappearance of the pilchard industry at the turn of the century the house became a fishing loft for the storage of pots and fishing gear and the boats were then pulled up the beach by means of the new petrol winch in the centre of the village.

We are not sure of the date but a man arrived in the village from a wreck who was deaf and dumb. No-one knew where he came from or what his name was, so he was affectionately known as "Dummie" and lived here upstairs using the loft as his fish loft together with the other fishermen. His photo is on the wall by the fireplace which was given to us by the lady who lived next door in Beach Cottage. Lizzie Anne Jane. She was born there and lived there into her eighties and her photo is also on the wall.

The entrance to the flat was via a door and steps from the path, and of course there was no water, electricity, or drainage at this time. We are not sure when Dummie died but after that the fisherman used the loft and the hand winch on the forecourt. Our father bought the place in 1956 from an artist by the name of Donnington who made the horse on the wall in the main bedroom. Our father converted it in 1957 as you see it now.

The sea has only been inside once in living memory in the storm of December 1989 when sea water reached the top of the stairs! It was a combination of spring tide, easterly gale, ground sea, low pressure and a freak wave which broke the door. Unfortunately we have been flooded twice with the rain as well so it is not possible to provide a smart carpet. We do hope to continue making improvements though, so please take time to fill in the questionnaire you will be given during your stay.

Guestbook entries:-

Sue Weston.

I have been quite busy since we got back but wanted to say that once again we had a lovely holiday at Dummer's Loft. The weather brightened during the week and we concentrated on local visits and two very good walks using the excellent walks booklets at the Cottage. Everything worked very well and my grandson was pleased to be able to use the wifi as both he and his sister were spending a lot of time doing revision for the exams they are now deeply into this term!I did make two local calls, we wanted to book a meal at the Cornish Craft Centre and weren't sure of the opening times. We did have a lovely meal there too! Am I right in thinking that the phone is new this year? I am sure that last year we used the public call box on the footpath? Do let me know if you would prefer a single cheque for the amount of the phone calls? We all enjoyed the new shower and the accommodation goes from strength to strength.Thank you again for organising it for us. Best Wishes

My friends and I have just spent a wonderful week in 'Dummers Loft'. On arrival we were absolutely delighted with the cottage, and the facilities provided left nothing wanting. On arrival we were greeted by the caretaker, and assured that he was only a phone call away if we had any problems.
It is the best cottage I have ever stayed in, and thank you so much. I will certainly be returning in the future..

Well what a wonderful experience, we had such a fantastic holiday in Dummers loft. Of a morning we got up and had that fab view of the Cove and to see the fisherman go out in the the mornings. The dogs had such a great time swimming in the sea. What else could any one ask for wonderful friends to go on holiday with and to stay in such a great place

Excellent characterful beachside cottage set in picturesque fishing village with good local amenities, namely pub and restaurant! Great base for exploring local area and Helford Passage with some excellent coastal footpath walking on the doorstep. Will certainly be returning at earliest opportunity.
